Construction Site Management NVQs

Level 6 and Level 7 NVQs for site managers and senior managers, leading to the CSCS Black Manager card.

Level 6 or Level 7 — Which Do You Need?

All three qualifications lead to the same CSCS Black Manager card. The right one depends on your role, the scale of what you're responsible for, and your job title — not just seniority.

Level 7 Diploma · Not an NVQ

Construction Project Management

A separate Level 7 Diploma — equivalent to a master's degree — for senior project managers leading complex construction projects end to end. Because it's a diploma rather than an NVQ, it sits outside the table above, but leads to a different card: the White CSCS card (Academically Qualified Person).

The CSCS Black Manager Card

The Black CSCS card is the senior card in the scheme. It's held by construction professionals in management positions on site — site managers, contracts managers, project managers and directors. It shows you hold a recognised management qualification and have passed the health and safety test for your level.

How to get yours

1

Choose the NVQ that matches your role

Site management, contracts management or senior management — the table above shows which fits.

2

Complete the NVQ on site

No exams and no classroom. An assessor visits you at work, gathers evidence of what you already do, and confirms your competence.

3

Pass the Managerial & Professional HS&E test

Booked through CITB and taken at a test centre.

4

Apply to CSCS

Once you hold both the NVQ and the test pass, apply directly for your card.

Validity & renewal

The Black card lasts 5 years. To renew, you pass the Managerial & Professional HS&E test again — you don't retake the NVQ, as the qualification doesn't expire.
