The NVQ Level 6 Construction Contracting Operations Management assessment is aimed at construction managers who oversee specific contracts, projects, or trade operations in construction development.
If you are a construction business owner, project or contracts manager, and you are in charge of a specialist contract (i.e. trade), typically subcontracting under a larger building company, this qualification is the right fit for you.
This qualification is recognised by the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB)
NVQ level 6 construction managers during the meeting
As a construction manager, you are expected to be in charge of smaller parts of a project, or multiple projects at the same time. Your duties should be closely related to the construction management operations of specific specialist contracts.
Your hands-on experience in construction management must be backed up with proof of evidence from your work practice which we can relate to the assessment criteria.
The evidence you will supply can be from your current as well as previous contracts, and it should demonstrate your ability to do the following:
•
gather and implement the necessary information in order to organise H&S procedures in the construction environment
•
obtain necessary information, plan, and develop the work programme for your team operations in line with a main contractor's requirements
•
develop organizational procedures for monitoring project progress
•
implement construction organisational procedures and delegate specific organisational tasks to line supervisors or subcontracting teams to meet the contract requirements
•
control budget, costs and procurements, as well as organise supply and storage of the project resources
•
control the quality of the project
•
attend and take part in regular project progress meetings
•
liaise with other contractors, superiors, or clients regarding the project
Remember different companies use different types of information and documentation. Your task is to explain (ideally with proof) how you organise, manage and execute your work activities in your management role.
Depending on your specific construction management role within the contract, you have a range of routes to choose from for this qualification:
General
Buying
Estimating
Planning
Quantity Surveying
You should select the pathway that closely relates to your current job role, as it will be much easier to gather and provide the necessary evidence to cover the criteria. You will discuss these options with your NVQ assessor during the screening and enrolment process, and you'll be advised on the best route that suits your construction management role.
The selected pathway will determine a set of mandatory and optional units that you will be required to cover. To learn more about this, refer to the "Qual Structure" section.
The Level 6 Construction Management qualification is assessed by an NVQ assessor who is a chartered member of the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB).
Construction managers employed directly by the main contractor or large specialist subcontracting company may want to pursue the NVQ Level 6 Construction Site Management qualification.
NVQ Level 6 Construction Management Qualification Structure
To achieve the NVQ Level 6 Construction Management (officially titled: NVQ Level 6 Diploma in Construction Contracting Operations Management), you are required to complete all mandatory units as well as the minimum required number of units from the optional group. The total number of units in the optional group will be determined by the chosen pathway of construction management qualification.
For instance, below is a list of mandatory and optional units that comprise the NVQ Level 6 Construction Management - General pathway. It includes 4 mandatory units that must be completed. Additionally, there are 14 optional units, from which you must choose and complete at least 3 units that best suit your job role. This ensures that the evidence you provide for the assessment criteria in the optional group is relevant to the chosen optional units.
Before starting the assessment, during the screening and assessment planning phase, you will have the opportunity to discuss the qualification units and pathway options. Your NVQ assessor will determine and recommend the most suitable option for you.

How It Works?
Usually, it takes 2 assessment sessions to cover the construction management assessment criteria. Depending on the quality of evidence we receive from you and your personal circumstances, these sessions may involve a site visit.
Although the assessment process can vary depending on the route you've selected at the time of your booking (for options, see the booking form), we can outline typical steps you can expect during your assessment. However, given the dynamic nature of our industry, we always strive to adapt the process to suit your individual situation.
For simplicity, let’s break down the process of a typical construction management assessment into six chronological steps.
Step 1: Introduction
You will receive an instructional email as startup guidance, which will include a list of product evidence examples and suggestions for effective collaboration methods with your assessor. This will help you identify the evidence you need to compile for your assessment portfolio.
Step 2: Welcome Call
You will arrange an induction call (usually a video call) to discuss the assessment requirements, your work, and the product evidence from your current or previous jobs. During this call, you'll agree on the next steps and gain a clear understanding of what you need to do to prepare for the first assessment session. The assessor will also email you any required course materials.
Step 3: Compile Evidence
Based on the guidance and advice provided by the assessor, you will start compiling evidence (if not already available) for the first assessment session.
Step 4: The Assessment
Once you have gathered sufficient evidence for the first session, you will arrange a video call to discuss all the files and explain your work process and methods. The first session is generally designed to cover around 50% of the assessment criteria.
Step 5: Assessment Progress
Following the first session, the assessor will review all the evidence and conduct a gap analysis to identify the remaining criteria. You will receive feedback on the necessary steps to address these criteria. Once you have gathered the additional evidence, you can arrange your next session, which may involve an onsite visit or a video call based on the evidence quality and your circumstances.
Step 6: Completion
During this session, our goal is to address all the remaining criteria to complete your assessment. In most cases, this marks the final session. Once we have covered 100% of the assessment criteria, we will compile and finalize your portfolio. Then, we will proceed to claim your NVQ achievement from the Awarding Body.
NVQ Level 6 Construction Management Fast Track
A typical NVQ construction management assessment may take around 6 weeks to complete, but the assessment turnaround time can vary significantly depending on factors such as your work situation, motivation, and ability to provide the assessor with the required product evidence for the NVQ Level 6 Construction Contracting Operations Management qualification.
Before you start the Construction Management NVQ assessment, you will discuss and cover all aspects of your work situation with your assessor. You will agree on a realistic date for assessment completion. Once both of you agree on an achievable timeline, the assessment process can then commence.
