NVQ Level 2 Site Carpentry: Entry Requirements
There are no entry requirements for this NVQ. You do not need any previous qualifications, you do not need GCSEs, and you do not need a National Insurance number to register.
What you need is the experience and the work. This is an assessment of what you already do, not a course. You must be working as a carpenter now, or have done recently, and your assessor needs to be able to see that work. Eligibility is confirmed during screening, before you pay anything.
The NVQ Level 2 Carpentry offers various pathways to suit your specific work and experience in the carpentry trade.
Your qualification pathway will depend on the particular type of carpentry work you are currently engaged in: Site Carpentry, Architectural Joinery, Structural Post and Beam Carpentry, among others. The complete list is further down this tab.
As a practical example, let's consider the most popular pathway, Site Carpentry. To achieve this qualification, you must be able to meet the following performance criteria:

During the carpentry NVQ assessment, you will be required to provide evidence for the assessment criteria listed above. Any photos or videos from your previous site carpentry projects could be used for your current assessment portfolio.
The evidence we collect from you must demonstrate your skills and ability to perform quality carpentry work in line with site specifications and safety standards. We emphasise H&S aspects, such as the correct use of PPE and safety gear, to ensure you can carry out your work in a safe manner.
To demonstrate your competence, we will assess your practical skills along with your overall knowledge of materials and tools that you use daily, ensuring you can identify the correct methods and sequence of work related to the site carpentry trade.

How Quickly Can You Get Your NVQ Level 2 Site Carpentry?
Faster than most people expect. Six units, one site visit in most cases, and evidence that comes from the first fix and second fix you are already doing.
Two optional add-ons affect the pace and the effort:
No Written Answers, £200. Without it, we email you question sheets covering the knowledge criteria and you fill them in at home. With it, your assessor covers the same ground by talking to you on site while you work. If writing is not your strong point, or you would rather not spend evenings on paperwork, this is the one worth having.
Fast Track, £200. Priority status and an assessment planned around your working week.
Neither changes the standard. You are assessed against the same criteria either way. They change how much of the work lands on you and how quickly it gets done.
One practical point specific to this trade. The criteria ask for a spread of work: three first fix components, five second fix, three cutting machines, two shaping machines. If your current job is all second fix, you will need evidence from other jobs to cover the rest, and photographs from previous projects count. Tell your assessor at the start what your recent work has actually involved, and they will plan around it rather than discovering a gap late.
Once your assessment is complete and the portfolio goes to the awarding body, certification typically takes up to 15 working days, though this varies with the awarding body’s workload.
What the NVQ Level 2 Site Carpentry Covers: All 6 Units
To achieve the NVQ Level 2 Carpentry, you must complete 6 units. For the Site Carpentry pathway, you must complete 3 mandatory units and choose at least 3 optional units that match the work you do.

The optional units are where the carpentry actually sits. The three mandatory units are the general workplace units every Level 2 construction NVQ carries, covering health and safety, working practices and handling materials. The three or more you choose from the optional list are the trade itself, which is why the choice matters more here than on qualifications with a fixed trade unit. The units listed are those for the Site Carpentry pathway. Your assessor confirms the right pathway and unit selection during screening and assessment planning, before you commit to anything.
How the NVQ Level 2 Site Carpentry Assessment Works
Although the assessment process can vary depending on the package you selected at the time of your booking (for options, see the booking form), we can outline the typical steps you can expect during your assessment. However, given the dynamic nature of the industry, we always aim to adapt the process to suit your individual situation.
For clarity, let's break down the typical assessment process for a carpenter into 5 steps.

Initial Sign-Up
You complete a short enrolment form and speak with your assessor about your experience, job role, and upcoming work plans. Together, you agree on the next steps and discuss potential dates for a site visit (if possible).

Evidence Collection
You provide examples of your day-to-day work. This may include photos, videos, job sheets, method statements, or short video diaries of how you carry out certain tasks. Your assessor guides you on exactly what is needed, so you only submit relevant evidence (typically via WhatsApp, emails, etc.).

On-Site Observation
If applicable, your assessor visits your site to observe you carrying out your normal work. There are no tests or exams. Just your usual tasks. In some cases, a remote observation can be arranged via Zoom. The observation method is always agreed with you in advance.

NVQ Level 2 Site Carpentry Cost and Payment Plans
The NVQ Level 2 Site Carpentry costs £755 plus VAT. That is £906 including VAT at 20%.

The Three Optional Add-Ons
Unlike the management qualifications, nothing is bundled on Level 2. Three options are available:

1-Day Registration, £50. Registration confirmation within one working day, which is what you need if you are applying for a temporary red Experienced Worker CSCS card to stay on site while you complete the assessment.
That last one is worth understanding before you decide. If you already hold a valid card and are simply upgrading, you probably do not need it. If you are being asked for a card to get through the gate next week, you do.

CITB Grant Funding for the NVQ Level 2
This qualification is covered by the CITB Short Qualification Grant, which is paid on achievement rather than up front, and is claimed by the employer rather than by you.
The current rate is £600. From 1 January 2026, CITB pays the standard £600 rate for NVQs at Levels 2 to 6. Level 2 craft qualifications were never on the enhanced management or supervision rates that ended on 31 December 2025. The NVQ Level 2 Diploma in Wood Occupations is on the CITB short-qualifications list.
Who Can Claim the Grant
The grant is claimed by the employer. To be eligible, the employer must be registered with CITB and up to date with their Levy Returns.
A registered employer can claim for directly employed staff on the payroll, for business owners and partners, and for subcontractors. That last category matters a great deal in carpentry, where a large part of the trade is self-employed or works through a subcontractor.
The Short Qualification Grant is payable up to a maximum of four grants at each level per individual, and you can only claim once per individual for the same achievement.
Claims are made through the CITB Online Services portal within 52 weeks of the achievement date, with the achievement certificate or the awarding-body notification attached. For help with eligibility or the claim itself, CITB Customer Services is on 0344 994 4455.

How to Get Your Blue CSCS Card After the NVQ Level 2
The blue CSCS Skilled Worker card is the card for tradespeople who hold a Level 2 qualification in their occupation. It is valid for five years.
To qualify for it you need a Level 2 NVQ or SVQ in your trade, plus a valid CITB Health, Safety and Environment test pass. The NVQ Level 2 Site Carpentry is the qualification route for carpenters.
The CITB Operatives Test
You must have passed the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test for Operatives within the two years before you apply for the card.
There are three versions of the HS&E test: Operatives, Specialists, and Managers and Professionals. Most Blue Skilled Worker cards require the Operatives version. Check the CSCS Card Finder for your occupation in case it is one of the specialist exceptions.
The test costs £23.50. It runs for 45 minutes and contains 50 questions. Book online through Pearson VUE, by phone on 0344 994 4488, or directly with a local Internet Test Centre. On the day, arrive at least 15 minutes early and bring photo ID that includes your signature. Keep your Score Report afterwards.
You do not need the test to start your NVQ assessment. You need it to apply for the card.
The Red Experienced Worker Card, While You Wait
If you need a card to get on site before your NVQ is finished, the red Experienced Worker card is the temporary route. It is valid for one year and cannot be renewed. Complete the NVQ and apply for the skilled card.
CSCS normally expects at least one year of experience in the last three. Proof of registration from the awarding body or training organisation must include your name, the full qualification title including the level, and the date of registration, which must be in the last two years. You still need a valid HS&E test pass within two years. The 1-Day Registration add-on exists for exactly this situation.
Applying for the Blue Card
Apply online through CSCS Online or the My CSCS app. The application fee is £36.
You will need your NVQ certificate, your valid HS&E test pass, proof of identity and a recent photograph. If your qualification was issued by City & Guilds after 1 April 2013, you will need an electronic certificate with a certificate authentication code so CSCS can verify it directly.
Going Further, the Gold Card
If you work in a lead, chargehand or foreman role, the Level 3 carpentry qualification is the next step and leads to a gold card rather than a blue one. That progression is set out on the NVQ Level 3 Carpentry page, which the related qualification block on this page already links to.
CSCS issues the card, not us. Their application rules apply and can change. Fees quoted are correct as at September 2026.
NVQ Level 2 Site Carpentry Pay
The National Careers Service gives the carpenter range as £24,000 for starters up to £40,000 for experienced carpenters. That is a career-wide range, not a promise attached to any vacancy.
What the NVQ changes is not the number itself. It is access. Most main contractors will not let an uncarded operative on site, and you cannot get a blue Skilled Worker card without a Level 2 qualification in your trade.
Salary figures are indicative UK ranges as at September 2026. Actual pay varies by region, employer, working arrangement and the level of responsibility the role carries.
NVQ Level 2 Site Carpentry for Employers
For a contractor putting a carpentry team through, four things usually matter:
No time off the tools. Assessment happens on site, around the work. Your carpenters keep working, and the observation is of the fix they were doing anyway.
Grant recovery. If you are CITB registered and up to date with your Levy Returns, the Short Qualification Grant is £600 per achievement, claimable for employed staff, owners, partners and subcontractors alike, up to four grants at each level per individual.
Gate access. A carded team is a team that gets on site. The 1-Day Registration add-on supports a temporary red card application while the NVQ is under way.
Volume enrolment. The booking form takes a quantity, and payment plans apply to multi-candidate bookings.

Once your assessment has been successfully completed and your qualification is ready to be issued, you have a few options if you're paying by instalments:
