Construction Senior Management NVQ Requirements
The NVQ Level 7 in Senior Management is for individuals in high-level management roles within large construction organisations, or for business owners and directors who manage projects at a strategic level, develop business strategies, plan organisational procedures, work with clients, and lead management teams at a high level.
To undertake this assessment, you must have senior management experience. This includes managing project processes, leading teams, planning budgets, procurement, resources, and organisational procedures within construction.
Your experience and responsibilities will determine which optional units you select (see the qualification structure for details). You must have sufficient evidence to cover the selected units and achieve the required credits.
During the assessment, you must demonstrate your practical skills and knowledge through evidence and examples from your current or previous projects.
Your evidence should demonstrate your ability to:
-
•
control project quality, legal and contractual compliance, progress, value, and costs
-
•
undertake continuous personal development and manage the development of others
-
•
manage project risks and opportunities
-
•
manage project team activities
-
•
develop systems for managing health, safety, and welfare
-
•
use project feedback and implement project management systems
-
•
build project teams and manage working relationships
-
•
plan workforce requirements and manage workforce plans
-
•
provide advice on technical construction issues and solve complex problems
-
•
deliver construction services while complying with laws, policies, and ethical and contractual requirements
-
•
manage budgets and assess entitlement for payments
-
•
and other relevant senior management duties
These criteria come from the mandatory units. Additional criteria depend on your experience, current duties, and the evidence you can provide. For optional units, refer to the “Qual Structure” section.
An initial discussion with our NVQ assessor will confirm the units you need to cover and the related assessment criteria.
The NVQ Level 7 in Senior Management is assessed by a CIOB-chartered NVQ assessor.
NVQ Level 7 Senior Management Qualification Structure
The NVQ Level 7 Senior Construction Management qualification has 6 mandatory units and 13 optional units. You must complete enough optional units to reach 62 credits, normally four or five units depending on their credit values.
Optional units are selected based on your job role and the evidence you can provide from current or past projects.
During the screening and assessment planning stage, you and your NVQ assessor will review the units. The assessor will recommend the units that best match your experience and responsibilities.

Senior Management NVQ Assessment Process
Typically, the senior management assessment is completed in two assessment sessions. Depending on the quality of the evidence you provide and your circumstances, these sessions may include a site visit, although most assessments are completed remotely.
The assessment process may vary depending on the route selected at booking (see the booking form for options). However, the typical process follows the steps outlined below. We adapt the assessment to suit your individual situation when necessary.
For clarity, the senior management assessment process can be broken down into six chronological steps.
Step 1 Introduction
You will receive an instructional email with guidance, a list of product evidence examples, and suggestions for working effectively with your assessor. This will help you identify the evidence needed for your assessment portfolio.
Step 2 Welcome Call
You will arrange an induction call (usually via video) to discuss the assessment requirements, your work, and the evidence from your current or previous projects. You will agree on the next steps and clarify how to prepare for the first assessment session. The assessor will also send any required course materials.
Step 3 Compile Evidence
Using the assessor’s guidance, you will begin compiling evidence for the first assessment session.
Step 4 The Assessment
When you have enough evidence for the first session, you will arrange a video call to review the files and explain your work processes. This first session normally covers about 50% of the assessment criteria.
Step 5 Assessment Progress
After the first session, the assessor will review your evidence and carry out a gap analysis to identify any remaining criteria. You will receive feedback to help you gather the additional evidence. Once this is ready, you will organise the next session, which may be onsite or via video. In most cases, we use video calls.
Step 6 Completion
During this session, we aim to cover all remaining criteria needed to complete your assessment. In most cases, this is the final session. Once 100% of the criteria are met, we will compile and finalise your portfolio and then submit your NVQ achievement claim to the Awarding Body.
