NVQ Level 3 Architectural Joinery Cost and Payment Plans
The NVQ Level 3 Diploma in Architectural Joinery costs £1,045 plus VAT. That is £1,254 including VAT at 20%.

What Is Included in the £1,045
- 1-Day Registration. All assessments start the same day. If you need proof of registration urgently, we aim to send your registration confirmation within one working day so you can apply for a temporary Experienced Worker (red) CSCS card. The red card is valid for one year and cannot be renewed.
- A dedicated assessor with a direct contact number, not a shared inbox.
- Assessment planning and gap analysis against every assessment criterion, including confirmation of the optional unit.
- Workshop assessment and professional discussion. Architectural joinery is assessed partly by watching you work, so a workshop visit is normal rather than exceptional on this qualification.
- Portfolio construction. You supply the evidence from the products you are making. We analyse and map it against the assessment criteria.
- No Written Answers. Your assessor asks about the work you already do, then documents your answers against the assessment criteria.

CITB Grant Funding for the NVQ Level 3
The NVQ Level 3 Diploma in Wood Occupations is covered by the CITB Short Qualification Grant. The grant is paid on achievement, which means after the qualification is completed and certificated, not up front.
The current rate is £600. Level 3 craft qualifications sit on the standard Short Qualification Grant rate. They were never on the enhanced management or supervision rates.
Who Can Claim the Grant
The grant is claimed by the employer, not by the candidate. To be eligible, the employer must be registered with CITB and up to date with their Levy Returns.
A registered employer can claim for directly employed staff on the payroll, for business owners and partners, and for subcontractors. That last category matters a great deal in architectural joinery, where a large part of the trade works on a subcontract basis. If you use subcontracted joiners, their achievements can still attract grant.
The Short Qualification Grant is payable up to a maximum of four grants at each level per individual, and you can only claim once per individual for the same achievement.
How to Claim It
Claims are made through the CITB Online Services portal within 52 weeks of the achievement date. You will need to attach the achievement certificate or the achievement notification email from the awarding body. The application cannot be processed without it.

How to Get Your Gold CSCS Card After the NVQ Level 3
The gold CSCS Skilled Worker card (Advanced Craft) is the card for tradespeople who hold a Level 3 craft NVQ. It is valid for five years. This is not the gold Supervisor card.
To qualify for it you need a Level 3 NVQ or SVQ in your trade, plus a valid CITB Health, Safety and Environment test pass. CSCS lists this occupation as Bench Joinery. The certificate pathway is the NVQ Level 3 Diploma in Wood Occupations (Architectural Joinery). Confirm the occupation on the CSCS Card Finder before you apply.
The CITB Operatives Test
You must have passed the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test for Operatives within the two years before you apply for the card.
There are three types of HS&E test: Operatives, Specialists, and Managers and Professionals (MAP). For most Gold Advanced Craft cards, including Bench Joinery, you need the Operatives version. Confirm on the CSCS Card Finder if your occupation is listed as a specialist exception.
The test costs £23.50. It runs for 45 minutes and contains 50 questions. Book online through Pearson VUE or citb.co.uk, by phone on 0344 994 4488, or directly with a local Internet Test Centre. On the day, arrive at least 15 minutes early and bring photo ID that includes your signature. Keep your Score Report afterwards, because it carries information you will need for the card application.
You do not need the test to start your NVQ assessment. You need it to apply for the card. Many candidates book it while their assessment is under way.
Applying for the Gold CSCS Skilled Worker Card
Apply online through CSCS Online or the My CSCS app. The application fee is £36.
You will need your NVQ certificate, your valid HS&E test pass, proof of identity and a recent photograph. Two situations need extra paperwork:
- City & Guilds qualifications issued after 1 April 2013. You must submit an electronic certificate showing the qualification details and a certificate authentication code, so CSCS can verify it directly with City & Guilds.
- Qualifications gained outside the UK. You will need to contact Ecctis, the UK national agency for international qualifications, and apply for an Industry Skills Statement so CSCS can compare your award against UK standards.
CSCS issues the card, not us. Their application rules apply and can change. Fees quoted are correct as at September 2026.
Can You Get a Gold Card Without an NVQ?
Not through experience alone, and this is the question architectural joiners ask most.
The industry ran an Experienced Worker route for years, and a great many tradesmen got carded on the strength of time served rather than a qualification. That is not how it works now. CSCS issues cards against a qualification plus a valid CITB Health, Safety and Environment test pass. Years at the bench, references from the workshop, and a portfolio of finished joinery are all real evidence of skill, and none of them is a qualification.
What the red Experienced Worker card does is buy you time. It is a temporary card, valid for one year and not renewable, that lets you stay on a UK site while you complete an NVQ. That is why registration confirmation within one working day matters on this page. You register, you get on site, you complete the assessment, you apply for the gold Skilled Worker card.
CSCS normally expects at least one year of experience in the last three. Proof of registration from the awarding body or training organisation must include your name, the full qualification title including the level, and a date of registration in the last two years. You still need a valid HS&E test pass within two years, using the same test as the skilled card you are working towards: Operatives.
The NVQ itself is not a course. Nobody is asking a joiner with fifteen years in to sit in a classroom and learn how to set out a door. The assessment is watching you do the work you already do, and answering questions about it out loud.
NVQ Level 3 Architectural Joinery Salary
The National Careers Service gives the carpenter range as £24,000 for starters up to £40,000 for experienced carpenters. That profile also lists joiner and bench joiner as alternative titles. That is a career-wide range, not a promise attached to any vacancy.
What the NVQ changes is not the number itself. It is access. A gold Skilled Worker card is what a main contractor's gate expects from a joiner in a lead or chargehand role, and you cannot get one without a qualification. It is also the qualification that opens the Level 4 supervision route, which is the step most chargehands take next if they want to move off the bench.

NVQ Level 3 Architectural Joinery for Joiners Working Overseas
The assessment is work-based, which means it does not depend on you being in the UK. Evidence comes from the work you already do, wherever it is done. Professional discussion can be remote. Where observation is needed, it is planned with your assessor.
The certificate you receive is the same UK, Ofqual-regulated qualification a UK-based candidate receives. The CSCS card is a UK site access card and only becomes relevant if and when you work on a UK site.
NVQ Level 3 Architectural Joinery for Employers and Contractors
