NVQ Level 3 Diploma in Bench Carpentry: Everything You Need to Know

Entry Requirements

The bench carpentry pathway comes under NVQ Level 3 Wood Occupations qualification, and is designed for carpenters with 3+ years of bench carpentry work experience.

Like all Level 3 qualifications, this qualification also includes three modules related to a supervisory role. This means that to qualify for the NVQ Level 3 in Bench Carpentry assessment, you are expected to have lead carpenters, also known as foreman or chargehand, experience. Additionally, you will be expected to know how to manufacture bespoke bench carpentry products, as well as setup and safely use your workshop tools and fixed machinery.

The skillset requirements for a bench carpenter include the following:

1. Produce setting out details and manufacture 2 of the routine shopfitting products

Doors
Frames and linings
Shopfront sashes
Panelling and cladding
Units and fitments

2. Manufacture 3 of the bespoke shopfitting products

Door sets
Internal screens
Frames and linings
Shopfront sashes including associated elements
Panelling or cladding
Units and fitments
Products incorporating any of the following – glass, fabrics, veneers, laminates
Staircases (straight and with turns)
Handrails and balustrades
Shopfitting products with single curvature features

4. Lead bench carpentry activities in the workplace

Read and understand the project Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS)
Implement safe work practices in daily work activities according to RAMS
Liaise with the site management as well as other trade supervisors to organise workflow according to programme of works
Plan and organise work activities in line with project policies and programme of works
Monitor safety on site and carry out safety inspections of tools and/or equipment
Monitor and organise the supply of materials and/or equipment

Remember different companies use different types of information and documentation. Your task is to explain (ideally with proof) how you organise and supervise your work activities in your bench carpentry and supervision role.

Qualification Structure

To achieve the NVQ Level 3 Bench Carpentry (the official title: NVQ Level 3 Diploma in Wood Occupations), you must complete a minimum of 10 units. Depending on your current work duties and experience, you will need to choose and complete at least one optional unit to reach the required number of credits for this qualification.

For instance, the NVQ Level 3 Bench Carpentry qualification consists of 9 mandatory units that must be completed, plus 3 optional units. You need to select at least one optional unit that aligns best with your bench carpentry duties. Choosing the right optional unit from the list, one that fits your day-to-day bench carpentry work, simplifies the whole process. It helps you meet the criteria more naturally because it builds on your existing knowledge, practice, and available evidence.

Before starting the assessment, you will have the opportunity to discuss the qualification unit options during the screening and assessment planning phase. Your NVQ assessor will recommend the unit that is most suitable for your role.

How It Works

Usually, it takes 2 assessment sessions to cover the bench carpentry assessment criteria. Depending on the quality of evidence we receive from you and your personal circumstances, these sessions may involve a site visit.

Although the assessment process can vary depending on the route you've selected at the time of your booking (for options, see the booking form), we can outline typical steps you can expect during your assessment. However, given the dynamic nature of our industry, we always strive to adapt the process to suit your individual situation.

For simplicity, let's break down the process of a typical assessment for a bench carpenter into six chronological steps.

Introduction

You will receive an instructional email as startup guidance, which will include a list of performance criteria. This will help you identify the evidence you can start gathering for your assessment portfolio.

Welcome Call

You will receive a phone call (usually the next day) from your NVQ assessor to discuss the assessment requirements, your work, and potential product evidence that you can provide for your assessment. This evidence may come from your current or even previous/completed projects. During this call, you'll agree on the next steps and gain a clear understanding of what you need to do to prepare for the first assessment session. The assessor will also email you any required course materials.

Compile Evidence

Based on the guidance and advice provided by the assessor, you will start collecting evidence (if not already available) for the first assessment session.

The Assessment

After gathering sufficient evidence for the first session, you will schedule a date and time for the first session, which may involve an onsite visit or a phone call based on the evidence quality and your circumstances. During this session, you will discuss the evidence and explain your work processes and methods. The first session is generally designed to cover around 50% of the assessment criteria.

Assessment Progress

After the first session, the assessor will review all the evidence and conduct a gap analysis to identify any remaining criteria. You will receive feedback on the steps required to address these criteria. Once you've collected the additional evidence, you can arrange for your next session, which is typically a remote session conducted over the phone.

Completion

During this session, our aim is to address all the remaining criteria to complete your assessment. In most cases, this marks the final session. Once we've covered 100% of the assessment criteria, we will compile and finalize your portfolio, and then proceed to claim your NVQ achievement from the Awarding Body.

Once your assessment has been successfully completed and your qualification is ready to be issued, you have a few options if you're paying by instalments:

Pay the remaining balance in full and we'll issue your certificate immediately.

Request an Early Certificate Release (ECR), which may allow you to receive and use your certificate before your payment plan is completed.
