Rainscreen Cladding NVQ Requirements

The NVQ level 2 cladding qualification is for installers who work on-site fixing and assembling rainscreen cladding systems. If you regularly install support brackets and frames, insulation, membranes, and cladding panels on commercial or residential projects, this is aimed at you.

You should have site experience, understand basic fixing methods, and be confident working at height. You do not need formal training beforehand, but you must be able to prove your day-to-day competence. This includes:

  • Preparing the work area and materials
    • Interpreting drawings, specifications, and method statements
    • Checking materials for defects and confirming they meet requirements
    • Setting out correctly using levels, lines, and measurements
    • Preparing substrates and support structures
  • Installing support systems
    • Fixing brackets, rails, and support frameworks
    • Ensuring correct spacing, alignment, and anchor fixings
    • Using appropriate tools, anchors, and fixings as specified
  • Installing insulation and membranes
    • Fitting insulation boards to the required standard
    • Installing breather membranes, vapour control layers, and fire-stopping
    • Sealing joints and ensuring continuity of fire barriers
  • Fixing cladding panels
    • Cutting, shaping, and drilling panels where required
    • Installing panels to line, level, and tolerance
    • Securing panels using mechanical fixings or proprietary systems
    • Following manufacturer installation requirements
  • Quality, safety, and compliance
    • Working safely at height and using access equipment correctly
    • Applying safe manual handling and tool use
    • Following site safety rules, RAMS, and permit systems
    • Communicating with the site team and reporting issues
    • Maintaining a clean and safe work area

You will need to provide real, job-related evidence that proves your competence. Typical evidence includes:

  • On-site photos of work in progress and completed installations
  • Short video diaries showing you carrying out key tasks
  • Signed employer or supervisor witness testimonies
  • Method statements, risk assessments, and permit-to-work documents you follow
  • Drawings, specifications, or marked-up plans you have worked from
  • Records of materials used, deliveries, or inspections
  • Timesheets or job sheets confirming your role on specific tasks
  • Toolbox talk attendance records or relevant training certificates
  • Assessor observations during live work
