Typical roles include dry lining fixer, partition fixer, ceiling fixer, interior systems installer, or a general construction worker regularly involved in boarding and metal framing. You should already have on-site experience and understand basic safety, hand tools, and system components.

To achieve this NVQ, you must show you can install dry lining systems safely and to specification. You need to demonstrate the following key skills and tasks:

  • Working safely
    • Identify hazards in the work area and follow site safety rules.
    • Use correct PPE and safe manual handling techniques.
    • Protect surrounding areas and maintain a tidy workspace.
  • Preparing and setting out
    • Read and understand drawings, specifications, and manufacturer details.
    • Measure and mark out positions for studs, tracks, ceiling grids, and fixing points.
    • Select and prepare tools, fixings, plasterboard, and framing components.
  • Installing metal stud partitions
    • Fix floor and ceiling tracks accurately to lines and levels.
    • Install studs, noggins, and supports to manufacturer requirements.
    • Fit services openings where required (doorsets, services, pattresses).
    • Ensure the system is straight, level, plumb, and structurally secure.
  • Installing dry lining boards
    • Cut, shape, and handle plasterboard safely.
    • Fix boards to metal stud, independent wall linings, or framed systems.
    • Use correct board types (standard, moisture-resistant, acoustic, fire-rated).
    • Follow correct fixing patterns and spacing.
    • Maintain clean edges, tight joints, and correct board alignment.
  • Installing MF ceilings (if part of your work)
    • Fix perimeter trim and suspension points.
    • Install primary channels, secondary channels, and hangers.
    • Fix boards to the MF framework to meet specification.
  • Working to quality standards
    • Follow manufacturers’ instructions for all dry lining systems.
    • Coordinate with electricians, plumbers, and other trades.
    • Maintain consistent, professional workmanship.

You need real site evidence (from current or previous projects) that shows the work you normally complete. A typical evidence includes:

  • Site photos of setting out, framing, fixing boards, MF installation, and finished work.
  • Drawings or specifications you followed.
  • Material delivery notes showing the boards and components used.
  • Toolbox talks or inductions you attended.
  • Risk assessments or method statements you followed.
  • Witness statements from supervisors or managers confirming your competence.
  • Short video diaries of you fixing frames or boards (if allowed on site).
  • Snag lists or quality inspections you were involved in.
